Beartown by Fredrik Backman

My Rating: ★★★★

Beartown is a tiny community nestled deep in the forest but with a big dream. The entire town talks, dreams and lives only for one thing, i.e., Hockey.

Their junior ice hockey team is about to compete in the national semi-finals, and they actually have a shot at winning. All the hopes and dreams of this place now rest on the shoulders of a handful of teenage boys.

But then, Maya, the daughter of the General Manager of the Beartown hockey team, is raped by one of the team's star players and the whole town is thrown into turmoil.

According to me the most important message in this book was loyalty. But the question was: Loyalty to your team or Loyalty to humanity?

This was an incredible story with amazing characterization. Each character along with their own personal background was equally important to the entire story. It is difficult for me to choose a favorite because I enjoyed reading about all of them irrespective of their flaws.

The situations faced and the questions arising in this book are all important. It isn’t something new but the way it has been presented, is definitely thought provoking. It shows the amount of courage, difficulty and willingness that one needs to have to stand up and do the right thing.

Overall, an excellent and emotional read! Highly Recommended!
